Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler: ‘My Perfectionism Got This Band to Where It Is Today’

Lots of bands do one or two albums and then flame out. So how has Aerosmith managed to keep things going for four decades? Steven Tyler says it has a lot to do with him being a perfectionist.

CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan followed the band and did interviews with them between shows in Bogota, Colombia for a piece on ’60 Minutes’ (airing this Sunday). And during her private sit-down with Tyler, things got interesting.

After telling him that his bandmates had already complained to her that he was sometimes cruel and too much of a perfectionist, Tyler expressed regret about some of the things he’s said to them over the years, but added:

You know what? I’m going to be big-headed right now, okay? I think my perfectionism and my busting everyone’s chops is what got this band to where it is today. In the end, I get a really good song and in the end, I get the hits. Yeah, I’m that good.

He has a point — it’s hard to argue with success.

Although Tyler’s been busy with his ‘American Idol‘ duties, the band have been putting together their first disc of original material in 10 years with producer Jack Douglas, who also worked with Aerosmith on early albums like ‘Toys In The Attic’ and ‘Rocks.’

Oh, and speaking of that much-maligned ‘Idol’ gig? About that, Tyler has no regrets. He recently said at a press conference that since he took a judge’s seat on the program, sales of Aerosmith’s back catalog have jumped a whopping 260 percent.
