FX has had little trouble securing awards in recent years, but 2017 may be a tricky one. Not only is Atlanta delayed to 2018, but the Katrina-based second season of American Crime Story won’t bow until next year either. At the very least, Season 3 will shortly follow.

FX boss John Landgraf confirmed the news out of his panel at the TCA press tour, noting that Katrina won’t have as much pre-existing material to draw on as The People v. O.J. Simpson. If nothing else, Landgraf noted the third, Versace-based season of American Crime Story would air within six months of Season 2.

Last we heard, American Crime Story Season 2 would draw its Katrina inspiration from Douglas Brinkley’s The Great Deluge, also potentially expanding its run as 13-15 episodes. John Travolta has his own character in mind, though American Crime Story Season 2 is officially looking to cast actors for George W. Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco. Sarah Paulson is confirmed to return, but few others just yet.

Season 3 will follow the July 1997 murder of Gianni Versace by Andrew Cunanan, who committed suicide eight days later as police closed in. Its first two episodes written by Tom Rob Smith, the season will be based on Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors.

We may hear more details as the day goes on, but will Seasons 2 or 3 live up to People v. O.J., especially after such a long wait?
