The Universal monster cinematic universe (UMCU) is about to launch with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy this summer, and the studio is already planning their next installment. Seemingly because he took to Aquaman like a fish to water, screenwriter Will Beall is diving into The Creature from the Black Lagoon next.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beall has signed on to pen the script based on the 1954 monster movie, which tells the story of a group of scientists who journey to a lost island in search of the evolutionary link between man and fish. The creature they do find, the Gill-man, systematically kills off most of the expedition and tries to make off with one of the members’ attractive human girlfriend.

There’s no word yet on how all these movies — Black Lagoon, Mummy, Dracula, Invisible Man, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing — are going to connect, but we do have a clue courtesy of The Mummy. Russell Crowe plays Dr. Henry Jekyll, whose name might be familiar to you from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which featured a man with an evil split personality. He could be the character or one of the characters who bridges the gaps between these stories, subtly bringing them all together under one blockbuster franchise roof.

We’ve already gotten a taste of that sort of thing in Kong: Skull Island, which uses the secretive MONARCH organization to tie it to Godzilla and the rest of Legendary’s upcoming movies about kaiju Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah in a post-credits stinger. Perhaps The Mummy will have something similar. Either way, it’s probably a good idea to stay until the end of the credits.
