Authorized Jimi Hendrix Biopic in the Works

Jimi Hendrix is making a not-so-slight return to a theater near you.

ScreenCrush reports director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) has renewed his efforts to dramatize the life of the legendary guitarist, which were previously scuppered due to an inability to reach an agreement with the Hendrix estate. Those problems have apparently been solved, and the project is moving forward again at Legendary Entertainment with the cooperation of Experience Hendrix.

The estate’s involvement is crucial when it comes to using Hendrix’s music, as viewers were reminded last year when a different biopic — John Ridley’s Jimi: All Is by My Side — was forced to go without any of its subject’s classic songs. Where Ridley worked around that problem by focusing on the early years of Hendrix’s career, this as-yet-untitled effort will be bound by no such restraints.

Greengrass is no stranger to real-life subjects, having previously directed the 9/11-inspired United 93 as well as Captain Phillips, an Oscar-nominated look at the heroism that transpired onboard during the the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking in the Indian Ocean. He’ll be working from a script by Scott Silver, whose previous credits include Eminem‘s 8 Mile.

There’s no word yet regarding who might play Hendrix in the movie, although Deadline notes that when the project was first in motion, Greengrass had his eye on Anthony Mackie, who’s since gone on to play Sam Wilson, otherwise known as the Falcon, for Marvel.
