Man Drives Same Car Over 3 Million Miles, Extends His Own Astonishing Record

When people talk about their cars getting good mileage, this is probably not what they mean.

Irv Gordon recently extended a record that will be tough to beat – he has driven the same car over three million miles. The vehicle is a 1966 Volvo P1800. He already owned the record for most miles driven by one person in a non-commercial vehicle, setting it in 1998 when he took his Volvo to the 1.69-million mile mark.

Earlier this month, Gordon went over the three million-mile plateau while cruising along Alaska’s Seward Highway.

Gordon, 74, is quite pensive when it comes to the mark:

It’s not about getting to the three million miles; it’s about the trips that got me to the three million miles. I never had a goal to get to one million, to two million. I just enjoyed driving and experiencing life through my Volvo.”

The Volvo has been quite the globetrotter, hitting nine countries and stopping at 800 Waffle Houses during its tenure. It’s also been in 11 accidents and probably heard way more than its fair share of “Are we there yets?”

Don’t think Gordon isn’t looking ahead, either. He says the Volvo can keep going. “Everyone asks, what’s next? Well, I’ll keep driving my Volvo P1800 to auto shows and taking trips across the country,” he says. “Not much will change. But whether I drive four million miles is more up to me than it is the car. The car may be able to take it, but I’m not so sure about me.”
