Texas Forestry Museum Adds New Exhibit

This is truly making the best of a bad situation.

We know that last year was a bad wildfire season. In fact it was the worst season for wildfires since the Texas Forest Service started keeping records in 1922.

Some talented artists though have made art from the ashes, and now that's on display at the Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin.

Texas Counties Receive ‘Go-Ahead’ for Deer Hunting — After 36 Years!

Kind of like living in a "dry" county having to travel outside city limits to purchase liquor, bow hunters in Rockwall, Collin, and Dallas counties are relishing in the fact that they don't have to incorporate a "road trip" into a Saturday afternoon hunt.

Kids Cost How Much?

They’re out with those numbers again, about how much it costs to raise a child from age 0 to 17.

Parents will swallow hard. The US Dept. of Agriculture says it takes $234,900 to raise a kid, including food, shelter, and necessities. Depending upon your definition and your child’s definition of necessities, it could be $2 million, right? A kid has to have his Wii.

Texas is actually one of the cheapest places in the US to raise a child.

Is Texas Losing the Drawl?

Are we losin’ our drawl y'all?

A new study says Texas may be losing its twang. Do you agree?

If it’s true, the obvious answer may be because of the number of transplants that live in Texas. When a Chicago native moves to Texas they bring a northern accent and a lot of those people together can sort of squeeze out and disperse the yee haws.

The Average Coffee-Drinker has at least 2 Cups Per Day

Coffee is part of life for many of us.

Before making the big decision about whether or not to become pregnant, I asked my doctor if I could still consume my daily 2.5 cups of coffee during pregnancy. It’s a must. If I have a sip less than that, I can feel it. And I knew I may not survive pregnancy if I had to ween myself off, or worse yet, quit cold turkey.

If I could drink coffee while pregnant, then ok, I’d do more forward with the baby-havin’. If coffee was off limits during pregnancy, then that would just be a life change too huge to handle. Must have coffee!

Lines Are Long for the iPhone 5

First I must admit, I'm one of the few without an iPhone. I've been enjoying my beat up old Droid phone with a crack on the screen for quite some time, and when the iPhone 6 comes out in a year or so I'll probably still be rockin' the red-headed step child of the phone world. I do love the Droid.

But millions are flocking for the new iPhone 5 today. Are you one of the lucky ones to snag it?

Just How Important is the iPad?

Once you own an iPad, it turns out you end up loving it more than perhaps you love your own teeth. In fact, many iPad owners would rather endure root canal pain than part with their iPad. And you?

Is It That Time Already?

On a shopping trip this weekend I saw what may be the first one of the year. A Christmas tree! On September 15th.

At this particular store, the Christmas tree was fully decorated, and the snow globes, stockings, and Christmas cards were already for sale. Right there next to the Halloween decorations.

How early is too early?

Thieves Hit Lufkin Business That Caters to Kids

Who would rob kids of the opportunity to jump, bounce, and have fun?

A Lufkin business is trying to figure out how to move on after being hit by burglars. The Print Shack on N. Raguet Street in Lufkin was robbed last week, and the thieves took about $50,000 worth of bounce houses and equipment that the store rents for parties and backyard gatherings.

What is the Most Common Item Hotel Travelers Leave Behind?

Have you ever checked out of a hotel, traveled home, and then realized you left something behind in the room?

I have. On a road trip to the north, my family stayed at a hotel in Wichita, Kansas, and when we got home we could only find one Dora The Explorer sock. In the process of jumping on the bed and running around the room, our 3-year old at the time must have shed a sock and a cleaning person whose daughter also may have had just one sock, hit the jackpot.

What is the most common item hotel travelers leave behind? It has something to do with your smart phone.

Texas Deer Season Right Around The Corner

I'm optimistic that we'll have a chill in the air very soon, and with daytime heating being put to bed, that can only signify one thing -- deer hunting season in Texas is this close.

There were no safety classes when my daddy taught me to shoot 35 years ago, and reflecting back on those Kodak moments, me holding .30-06 (thirty-aught-six) shells, let alone loading up, would have been enough to scare "Billy The Kid".

Should have seen the expression on his face when I told him that I was - shooting - for a career in law enforcement.

Do You Wash Your Hands in Public?

Do you wash your hands EVERY time you use a public restroom?

Perhaps you wash your hands religiously after using the restroom at a store or restaurant, but not so much at work. Who cares, you know all those people in the office and they're like family, right? You can let the hand-washing slide there. Ew! Family members and those donut-eating co-workers have germs too.

Just how many people skip washing their hands at public restrooms and go ahead and spread the germs?
