Houston is the ‘Coolest City in America’

These sorts of lists always create arguments. Do you think our neighbors in Houston are the "coolest" in the US?

Forbes Magazine thinks so.

Top US Small Towns Named

There's something inherently cool about a small town. The people are nice (although they all know each other and can be in everyone's business), there's no traffic, and the stress level can be lower. I'm headed to my one-stoplight hometown in Nebraska for a little family bonding time next week and we're planning to sit on the deck and stare at the trees, and ask the local farmers for permission to walk into their fields and pick corn. Why vacation in a tropical location when you can have that kind of fun? Small towns rock.

Rand McNally and USA Today named the best small towns in all of America this week. Did Lufkin and Nacogdoches make the list?

Frightened Passenger Diverts Flight To Houston [VIDEO]

Usually, when I hear a horrific story about an escapade aboard an airliner, I'm on the front line of bashing the carrier until it limps away in shame, but in light of the shananigans that recently happened aboard a flight that was diverted to Houston, in addition to the airline offering recompense to to its passengers, this time I am defending the carrier's position.

Staycation? Here Are Some Ideas Around Lufkin and Nacogdoches

Sure it's great to jet off to an exotic location in the summertime and sit by a resort swimming pool and sip beverages with umbrellas in them. But since Hawaii is not on everyone's agenda or in all of our budgets, we've come up with some other ideas to have fun closer to home, and maybe discover some cool places in East Texas that you didn't know existed.

Don’t Drink and Drive, Especially Now

On an average weekend, drinking too much and getting behind the wheel is a bad idea.

But this weekend, over the busy 4th of July travel holiday, your chances of going to jail are even greater.

Construction Coming to Interstate 69

Changes are coming to Interstate 69. Of course, there will be construction headaches to put up with before traffic starts getting happy with the improvements, but if we can hang in there through that, the result should make travel easier around Lufkin, Nacogdoches, and Diboll.

New Texas Law Protects Tow Truck Drivers

When I first moved to the 'Lonestar State', after crossing two-thirds of the country with no hassle, I was pulled over by a state trooper because he was issuing a citation to a motorist on the shoulder of Interstate 20 at 7:43 in the morning, and I had failed to make a lane change.

I don't even think he finished writing the original citation to the person already subdued by his presence.  He jumped in "Adam-12", and strobe lighted my OUT OF STATE LICENSE PLATE for about a mile and a half, until I realized in disbelief that I was being called out!

Now I drive somewhere between Mr. Magoo and Mr. Ed, so I ruled out speed immediately, and was bewildered to hear I about a rarely enforced infraction, that forces me to vacate the lane.  Most of the other 49 states, include "if safe to do so".

Who Takes More Vacations, the Employee or the Boss?

It's vacation season and gas prices are low enough that the trip won't have to be cancelled because of that, so where are you headed? My family is going to Austin for a long weekend around the 4th of July, and then later in the summer we're going to see family in Nebraska. Exciting, I know.

If you have a job, chances are you look forward to time away from the job. Who takes the most vacations - us regular ole workers, or the bosses? Take a wild guess.

Gas Prices Plunging in the U.S, How Much is Gas in Lufkin and Nacogdoches?

Been to the gas station recently?  Prices are looking "swe - e - e - e - et"! While we may not ever see $2.50/gallon again, when compared to the overseas cost of petroleum, with the exception of oil rich regions abroad (including Puerto Rico?), the U.S. still reigns superior in less expensive fuel.  Check this out:

Railroad Crossings in East Texas Are Dangerous to Your Health

Now that the repaving has been completed on Timberland Drive, and in a speedy fashion I may add, is it asking too much to get crossing arms installed at the railroad tracks?  I mean the new paint looks great, but when you drive a Pinto there's no telling where the stall may occur.  Call me old fashioned, but a double yellow line painted in the center of the two lane highway is a false sense of security, since it does not stop a sleepy driver from crossing over it.

Lake Levels Are Up, More Boaters Hit the Water

By the end of the summer in 2011, the water levels were dangerously low at many Texas Lakes, and some were completely empty. Remember those images of Lake Travis near Austin? They had dry, cracked dirt where the water had existed before, and docks were left high and dry.

This year, much better!

Lake Sam Rayburn has seen steady traffic this weekend and more boaters are expected there today. I've also got friends headed to Lake Cypress Springs, a few hours north of here. If you're headed to the water for Memorial Day, keep this in mind.

Where are the Most Dangerous Intersections in Lufkin?

It's the beginning of a holiday weekend, YAY! And the beginning of people in your way on the road and aggressive drivers ticking you off. Who will present the biggest problem on the road today? It's those darn red light runners.

We've probably all had the experience of sitting at a red light that turns green, signaling our chance to go, and all of a sudden a car zooms through from the other direction. Near miss! Red light runners cause accidents all the time, and it turns out today is one of their favorite days to do it.

And what are the most dangerous intersections in Lufkin?
