Isaac hits Louisiana, Louisiana hits back

If there's one thing we've learned about Hurricane Isaac so far, it's that the storm has a mind of its own. First it was making a beeline for the Florida panhandle. Then it changed its mind and headed straight for New Orleans. Isaac finally made landfall in Louisiana late Tuesday night, then retreated briefly back to the Gulf, as if Louisiana had just sucker-punched it right in the face and forced it to think twice about coming in there. But alas, Isaac has hit our neighbors to the east, and hurricane warnings are out.

What does that mean for East Texas?

Heat Advisory for Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties

Venturing outside these days makes it hard to breath. Even walking from the nice, cool office out to the car after work can make a girl sweat. And we don't even want to talk about that temperature inside the car. Ouch! Those seats are sizzlin'.

We probably don't have to tell you that a heat advisory is in effect for much of East Texas, including Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties, through 7pm Thursday. What does that mean exactly?

‘East Texas Cricket Invasion 2012′ – Now Playing At a Residence or Business Near You! [VIDEO]

Nothing spoils a night sitting on the porch staring at a full moon like an insect infestation.  Where I live - got 'em all - Spiders, Ants, Roaches, and Crickets!  The Crickets outnumber the other bugs about three-to-one.

A person that specializes in the knowledge of insects has an unpronounceable title that begins with the letter "E" and ends with "ologist".  You can either SOLVE THE PUZZLE (Wheel of Fortune), or make an appointment with your optometrist.  If you can read the first three lines of the eye chart, you'll have the official sounding name of a person that gravitates toward something that most of us would simply like to never come in contact with.

In Texas This Summer, Sunscreen Is Your Friend

Summer is here, and it seems like everyone is hitting the pool or the lake. Who doesn't love relaxing on a boat with a few close friends, family members, and perhaps drinks with umbrellas in them? It's all fun and games until somebody gets a nasty, blistering sunburn.

I got one of those several years ago at Lake Travis in Austin. My back was bare while I was on a boat with friends, I didn't put an ounce of sunscreen on it, and I laid on a raft for about two hours. The next day, if it had been the time period where it was cool to type OMG, that would have been my choice of acronyms. Or perhaps IMBOF (is my back on fire). And yes, I made that up.

What's our skin cancer risk in Texas?

Summer Officially Arrives on Wednesday, June 20

You would think that summer began in East Texas last year around Christmas time.  Balmy, along with warmer than normal temps, and the steady rumbling of the A/C unit, was plenty enough to suggest we were reeling from "the other summer" (winter), even if the calendar hanging on the wall in the kitchen had pictures of snowflakes, icicles, and polar bears.

Wearing Sunglasses in a Rain Storm May Improve Driving Conditions

With all the recent rain thus far, I'm always looking for a safer way to maneuver through the sheets of wah-wah that smash against my Pinto.  Don't know yet if this the almighty answer to seeing better through the windshield, but it's worth a shot next time you are caught in a downpour.

Transit of Venus will be Visible in Lufkin and Nacogdoches

When you hear the phrase, “Transit of Venus,” it sounds like it might be a band name or a good club with velvet ropes and a line out the door on a Saturday night. But it has nothing to do with pop culture. It really does have something to do with the planet Venus, and it’s a rare event that we’ll be able to witness today in East Texas.

Parts of East Texas to Get Partial Views of Solar Eclipse

An eclipse like this only happens once every twenty years, and it will be viewable in Texas Sunday; partially anyway.

A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks out the sun for a time, and leaves a ring of fire around its circumference. The sky gets a little spooky-looking for a bit and then the moon and sun part like a good Dancing with the Stars release move, and life goes back to normal.

Spots like Reno, NV and Albuquerque, NM will have the most spectacular views of the complete eclipse, but the entire path of the eclipse stretches from China to Texas. Plenty of folks will have the opportunity to see the rare show of nature.

Is ‘Storm Chasing’ A New Sport? [VIDEO]

Flipped on the Weather Channel last night to see when the next 3 inches of "partly cloudy" was forecast for.  Instead, I witnessed six men, teamed  in pairs, all in different parts of the country (although every scene looked like Kansas) chasing storms!  Not any storms mind you.  Most specifically - tornadoes!

Just How Hot Will It Be This Summer?

Last summer was hot. Miserably hot. But meteorologists are predicting that this summer might not be so bad.

Might we actually be able to leave our air-conditioned homes, schools, and offices at 4 p.m. without pain? Will the pools be cool and refreshing, instead of feeling like bath water?
