Neither Marvel nor Netflix have made particularly clear how the future Defenders series will be scheduled, following Luke Cage’s September premiere, current Iron Fist production, or the others awaiting new seasons, but has Daredevil come to the rescue? Charlie Cox says The Defenders will shoot later this year, potentially setting us up for a 2017 premiere.

Speaking at a Netflix event in Paris, Cox reiterated his uncertainty about a third season of Daredevil (the second was greenlit after 11 days, while Jessica Jones took considerably longer), pointing toward a Defenders production date sometime in late 2016. That would presumably place Iron Fist star Finn Jones in for a busy schedule, shifting almost directly from his series’ production to the big team-up. Says Cox:

What we do know is at the end of this year we’re going to be making The Defenders and, of course, Daredevil is very much a part of that foursome … I have no idea what the storyline is going to be for that show. I’m very excited to see how those world’s combine… and interested to see tonally how those shows become one.

Not only that, Cox expressed some uncertainty (or at least played coy) as to whether The Defenders would incorporate any leftover Daredevil elements, saying “In terms of wrapping up any storylines, maybe they’ll do some of that in The Defenders. Or maybe they won’t.”

A third season of Daredevil seems at least likely (don’t forget, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher clearly had his own spinoff setup, regardless of what Marvel claims), while a confirmed second season of Jessica Jones will presumably shoot sometime after The Defenders. For the moment, Marvel still only intends two Netflix series per year, though it remains to be seen if a late 2016 start for The Defenders guarantees a 2017 premiere, or if post-production time requires a longer lead.

We’ll likely hear more (including on Iron Fist) in the coming weeks, but what should we expect from The Defenders shoot?
