Quentin Tarantino originally envisioned his hero squaring off with a slave trainer named Ace Woody, played by Kevin Costner. When Costner’s schedule wouldn’t allow him to appear in the film he was replaced by Kurt Russell. When Kurt Russell’s schedule wouldn’t let him appear in the film, the character was completely written out of the script. That’s just one of the surprising facts packed into the latest episode of You Think You Know Movies, which is on a quest for revenge (and to bring you this information about Tarantino’s Django Unchained).

Django is based on the Italian spaghetti Western series that originally starred Franco Nero (who has a brief cameo in Django Unchained). But did you know Will Smith and Michael K. Williams almost played the new Django before Jamie Foxx signed on for the title role? Or that RZA’s hero from The Man With the Iron Fists was supposed to make a cross-franchise cameo? Both true, along with the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t supposed to cut his hand during the dinner scene. When he did, and managed to finish the take in spite of the pain, Tarantino quickly rewrote the scene to incorporate DiCaprio’s injury.

“You Think You Know Movies?” is a ScreenCrush original series that dives deep into the cinematic worlds of your favorite movies and freeze frames a few tidbits you might not have known. We’ve already tackled Star WarsThe Avengers, and Spider-Man, but now it’s time to head way out west for a look at Django Unchained.
