As we approach the end of round 1 in district 14-5A play, the Lufkin Panthers face a big game tonight at Panther Gymnasium.

After a 1-3 start in district play, including two 4 point losses at College Park and The Woodlands (57-17 combined free throw count by the way) the Panthers will need to close out round 1 with a couple of victories.

Those wins could start tonight against the War Eagles, who are 2-2 in district play. Lufkin will need guard KeKe Coutee to keep filling it up on offense: the junior has scored 40 points in the last two games and is averaging almost 15 points per game in district. Sophomore point guard  Jaderrian Bennett has been hot as well, with 22 points in the last two games.

Coach JT Mcmanus’ club has been playing very well on defense, holding all 4 opponents under 60 points, with two of those under 50. With two wins this week The Pack could position themselves for a run at a 2nd straight runner-up finish in 14-5A, and return to the state playoffs where the Panthers went three rounds deep a year ago.

Jeff Todd and myself will have the call for you starting at 7:00 tonight, and can be heard online and on air.
