After Guillermo del Toro dropped out of the Dark Universe adaptation for DC and Warner Bros., it became yet another in a growing list of potentially cool movies that were never made and the future of the project was uncertain. Now it seems that Dark Universe has been resurrected, with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman replacing del Toro, who will remain involved as producer and screenwriter.

Per Variety, del Toro’s vision for the dark Justice League is not entirely lost, and even though the filmmaker is currently in production on his Cold War sci-fi romance The Shape of Water, he’s also writing a new draft of the Dark Universe screenplay for DC and Warner Bros. Liman, who recently reunited with Tom Cruise for American Made (formerly titled Mena), has signed on to helm the comic-book adaptation.

Dark Universe will feature a lineup that includes Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. The new project will reportedly “play a major role” in the DCEU, but as for how it connects to Zack Snyder’s Justice League (which is currently filming) and its related solo properties remains to be seen. Bizarrely, Variety compares Liman’s Dark Universe to Go, his 1999 ensemble thriller that was essentially Pulp Fiction for teens who like to party.

If that means Sarah Polley is joining the DCEU, I’m in.

In addition to Dark Universe, Liman is preparing to release American Made, a true crime thriller that hits theaters in 2017. He also recently wrapped The Wall with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and signed on to helm the post-apocalyptic YA adaptation Chaos Walking. With his schedule growing increasingly crowded, Liman is reportedly no longer attached to direct Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie for Fox. The X-Men spinoff has suffered repeated delays, though producer Simon Kinberg recently said they hope to begin filming in early 2017.
