This is a follow-up to a story I posted about 3 weeks ago.  Just want to remind you that the ‘Forest Country Job Fair’ will be held at Angelina College on Tuesday, May 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Ready?

(1)  Attire – Business Professional.  Meaning “flight attendant”, not “cocktail waitress”, for the ladies.  Men, your Sunday best please, and I’m not talking an alligator insignia polo shirt and Fred Couples golf shorts.

(2)  Arrival Time - Allow yourself enough of the day to visit with each prospective employer.  You cannot do this by showing up thirty minutes to close.

(3)  Resume – one page easy on the eyes ( as much space as there is copy).  Recruiters may disagree with this, but the largest font should be your TELEPHONE NUMBER.  Resumes should highlight ‘accomplishments’ of your work history.  Employed with an organization where you streamlined cost, while increasing productivity (and putting those percentages On The Resume), will likely mean more than saying “motivated employees with Subway sandwiches during weekly staff meeting”.

(4)  Can you answer these questions:  (a) “Tell us about yourself”, and (b) “What kind of skills will you bring that can benefit our company”?

The following responses may not be well received:

(a)  “At 32, I was the oldest person to win the 2012 Galopagus Rock Climbing challenge, where it took me only 18 minutes to scale a miniature Mount Rushmore”

(b)  “Besides typing 50 words per minute, I’m considered an exceptional worker that loves dogs”

(5)  Eye contact is a must.  Looking at the food court and wondering if they have a chili dog on the menu while shaking hands, could get you strike one in the first 15 seconds.

(6)  On this point, I always refer to the movie ”Wall Street”, where Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) tells Buddy Fox (Charlie Sheen) “…save the cheap salesman talk…” Above all, be yourself – and that should resonate immediately.

In September 2009 a handful of famous British rock musicians, including Robert Plant, performed a concert at London’s O2 Arena as a benefit for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Foundation. A DVD of highlights of the show, which was called “Rockwell,” will be released on June 19 by MVD.

Plant performs three songs on this DVD, two of which, ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Black Dog,’ are from his days fronting Led Zeppelin. The third, ‘Fixin’ to Die’ is a cover of a blues song by Bukka White that Plant released on his 2002 album, ‘Dreamland.’ Bob Dylan also released a version of the song on his 1962 debut.

The DVD also features Tom Jones (‘It’s Not Unusual,’ ‘Sex Bomb’ and ‘It’s Your Thing’), Joss Stone and David Grey. For the finale, all the acts gather on stage to sing the Beatles‘ ‘Let it Be.’

Nordorff-Robbins uses music therapy as a form of treatment for such conditions as autism, dementia, stroke, brain injury and depression. According to their website, they “deliver over 50,000 music therapy sessions per year in care homes, day centres, hospitals, schools and our own centres. We are also developing a range of other music and health projects aimed at bringing music to more and more people in local communities.”

Are you aware that Carlos Santana played — WOODSTOCK?  Before the tender age of eight, he was already playing violin and guitar.  Growing up he followed the “biggies” – John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.

He’s got 10 Grammy Awards to his name, and because he’s still actively recording and touring, his legacy might have to wait.  But that’s okay with most.  His latest milestone to his achievements was the launching (May 15) of “Shape Shifter“, which is album number 42 or 43 or 44 or 45 (lost count) in the collection.  Keep it rockin’ Carlos!

Listen below to one of his lost classic rock beauties.  The song is called ‘Open Invitation’, and Carlos is screaming at around 2:20 of the video!

Graduating seniors at Lufkin High School received $114,000 in scholarships from the Alumni Association Monday night at a ceremony at Tom Jack Lucas Auditorium. Big bucks! The LHS Alumni Association said that’s the highest dollar amount ever for them.

Contributions by other donors topped $3.1 million, and added up to hundreds of scholarships for 180 students. All that studying DID pay off. I know I thought all the hard work might never end, and then suddenly it did and then I wondered where all the time had gone. Scholarships are a nice way to ease the transition to college. They’re a pat on the back, and provide a financial boost in the fall.

We’ve highlighted some of the local winners here:

Valedictorian Ruth Watkins got the first ever John Mitchell Memorial Scholarship, named for the beloved teacher.

Morgan Elizabeth “Lizzie” Wallace and Amy Zhang were the winners of the Virginia and Bayo Hopper Memorial Scholarship. Wallace has spent much of this year in a battle with cancer, and the crowd supported her with an ovation and whooping applause Monday.

Conner Groom won the first ever Coach John Outlaw Memorial Scholarship.

Congrats to all, and toss that cap high at graduation! It won’t be long and you’ll be COLLEGE grads and you’ll be working 9 to 5 and married with 2.5 children and a dog. Enjoy the new beginning!

Oh yeah…the “Classic Rockers”…Denny, Katie, Cronin and Jaycee had a “classic” idea that I wanted to share with you.  Tell me what you think.  THEY suggested renaming Denman Avenue  –  “Journey Way”, and Atkinson Drive  –  “Pat Benatar Boulevard”!

I’m calling the mayor right now, and will let you know how it turns out.  In the meantime gang, keep rockin’, while making sure you don’t miss that Journey/Benatar tuneage on THE “Classic Rock” station – Q107 and Q1077.com!

In May of every year, Playboy announces their Playmate of the Year. Each Playmate of the Month from the previous year battles for the honor by campaigning for reader votes, but it’s ultimately Hef who decides. Last week, he unveiled this year’s PMOY – Miss April 2011 Jaclyn Swedberg.

Jaclyn grew up in Chino Hills, California where she graduated from high school in 2008. In college, she plans to major in Communications and wants to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. She’s already off to a good start, having appeared on four shows on Playboy TV: “Badass”, in which she does crazy stunts in the nude, ‘Playboy Beach House’ in Malibu, ‘Playboy Trip: Patagonia’ in Argentina, and ‘Camp Playboy’, which is like ‘Salute Your Shorts’ only with less Donkey Lips and more… D…S… lips.

You might think that’s a full plate, but Ms. Swedberg’s like the Ryan Seacrest of hot models — she’s also a host on a martial arts TV network called BlackbeltTV.

As far as interests and hobbies go, Jaclyn loves reading mysteries and thrillers, baking cupcakes and banana bread, yoga, Scrabble, and traveling – she’s been to more than 20 countries and her favorite place is Greece (maybe she could help out their economy?).

Congratulations, Jaclyn! It looks like we might have another Sara Jean Underwood in the making.

I’m always looking for local honey, since I’ve heard it’s good at helping with local allergies. Getting too scientific about it might make my head explode, but I’ve heard ingesting what the bees produce is supposed to help fight off seasonal allergies. I’m giving the kids a teaspoon a day and they don’t have many sniffles.

With the Farmer’s Market is open in Nac, you can not only get local honey, but just about anything else homegrown too.

The Farmer’s Market says it has baked goods, local organic beef, homemade candles, ceramics, Texas artisan cheeses, local organic chicken, free range eggs, local organic tilapia fish, flowers, various handcrafted items, herbs, local honey, jewelry, plants, preserves, local produce, homemade soaps and locally made fruit wines.

The Nacogcoches Farmer’s Market is open every Wednesday from 3-6pm, and Saturday’s from 8am-Noon. On Saturday’s they break out the breakfast burritos and tacos. Yum!  It’s located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets. See ya there.

Destiny Monique, the model/actress/former Marine with the coolest name ever, has just wiped the floor with Amber Nicole, Challis Taylor and her other smokin’ hot competitors to become our newest Babe of the Week.

Monique’s biggest threat came in the form of the sexy radio host Erika Othen, whose incredible modeling and singing abilities wowed the voters. But in the end, it was Monique’s dedicated Twitter and Facebook followers that lifted her up to the top.

Of course, she’s used to competing under pressure. (She was in the Marines, remember?) We’re guessing it was the perfect combination of looking fierce and being able to shatter a man’s nuts that made her the fan favorite.

Water Tower Music

The idea of turning an ’80s anthem like Def Leppard‘s ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ into a show tune isn’t going to sit well with many formerly Aquanetted, double-socked, Jordache-jean wearing rock fans.

Tom Cruise is challenged with turning Joe Elliott’s vocal performance into something unique and memorable. He gives up early, opting for a karaoke performance that’s too good to laugh at, but not quite good enough to want more.

‘Rock of Ages’ is a musical, so some amount of Broadway production is expected. The “Hey, huh‘s” that fall just beneath the opening guitar riff are certainly forgivable. In fact, more cheese would be a good thing. An extra set of jazz hands would really tick some people off, but for others with a better sense of humor it’d make this song a kitschy standout.

With Cruise on the stick, one finds himself focusing too much on the lyrics. Raise your hand if you’ve listened to the original ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ a million times but never paid attention to the pre-chorus. “Take a bottle / Shake it up / Break the bubble / Break it up.” No, the original ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ swept one away in a wash of emotional excess.

When you begin paying attention to the details, a 25-year-old song begins to show a few bald spots. The same effect is repeated in the bridge. “You got the peaches, I got the cream / Sweet to taste, saccharine.” Really? That’s what he says? Is there a more unrockstarlike word than “saccharine?”

For the most part Cruise’s vocals remain buried beneath the production. While the guitar work is simplified, and the rhythm section not nearly as explosive, the production is a highlight of this remake. The bright backing vocals add texture to an otherwise flat performance.

This version of ‘Sugar’ is like what ‘The New Class’ was to ‘Saved By the Bell.’ It brings a classic to a new audience, but it fails to separate itself from the original in any remarkable way. Instead of risking one audience to please another, the arrangement shoots to please both. At best it leaves one shrugging his shoulders in ambivalence.

The latest in a series of wide-ranging videos at Van Halen‘s official website features the elder band members sitting around a camera talking about old times like three friends sucking down brewskies in the garage. David Lee Roth leads a discussion in which Eddie and Alex Van Halen share how they would rig their stage and electronics to be ahead of their time in the early ’70s.

The video starts off a little slow with the three talking about naps, but soon each is sharing stories of the broke vehicles they would tour in, and their early smoke machine. The latter sounds very, very dangerous. Early gigs even featured a light show. “We had all the essential colors,” Eddie Van Halen says.

“We had red, white, green and off,” Roth answers laughing.

Many stories begin wit,h “Remember the …” As in, remember the wet t-shirt contests, and remember the way we’d set up the microphones. “For solos I would dance over and hold the vocal mic over to you,” Roth says as the brothers crack up. The impromptu nine-minute long interview ends with them talking about women — drunk women.

“You never give supermodels champagne until there’s 90 minutes left in the photo shoot because their little pancreases can’t handle the sugar,” Roth advises. “And for about 90 minutes everybody’s gonna be all tits and pits and after 90 minutes (falls asleep on Al’s shoulder).”

Ever been to an auto racing event where you tried to control your enthusiasm?  How about a horse race, where it’s neck and neck between “Bumblebee”, and “Sunflower”?  Don’t forget that 100 yard wire-to-wire track and field event that raised your blood pressure 30 points in less than 15 seconds!  Then, there’s catching the biggest fish at Toledo Bend’s Big Bass Splash this weekend.

I guess the same could be said about the political arena.  Knowing three acquaintances currently holding public office, they have all expressed the massive adrenaline rush from the first day on the campaign trail, to exhilaration from the moments after polls opens — culminating with exhaustive energy at the conclusion of the race.

Bob Brown is the new mayor of Lufkin, defeating incumbent (twice) Jack Gorden by a final vote of 1,515 to 1,061.

KICKS 105

An update now to the St. Jude radiothon which ran last week on our sister station, Kicks 105 – THE Country Leader. The utotal raised during the 16th annual radiothon was $105,185!

When Danny Thomas opened the doors in 1962, he bagan changing lives of children across the globe.  St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is celebrating 50 years of “Finding cures” and “Saving children”.  Where no child is denied treatment based upon the family’s ability to pay, St. Jude’s averages 7,800 patient visits each year, treating some 260 kids daily, and pushing overall survival rates for childhood cancers from near 20% when the doors of the hospital originally opened, to around 80% today!

Even though the radiothon has ended, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital still needs support for the long road ahead.  Donations are simple to make, and by doing so, you will be fueling the groundbreaking research that leads to pioneering care and treatments.

A sad day for the History Channel’s ‘Swamp People’ cast, crew, family and fans.

WAFB in Baton Rouge, LA, reports that Mitchell Guist was pronounced dead Monday morning at Teche Regional Hospital in Morgan City.

According to the story, the ‘Swamp People‘ cast member was loading something onto a boat around 9 a.m. along the Belle River when he slipped and fell.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

The man chosen to replace Scott Weiland as frontman for Velvet Revolver is … Scott Weiland. The oft-troubled singer is back with the band, and they’re making new music with an eye on a third studio album.

During an interview with ABC News Radio, Weiland talked about how far the band has already progressed. “They gave me a couple of songs and myself and Dave (guitarist Dave Kushnter) and Duff (bassist Duff McKagan) are gonna be getting together for a song writing session next week.”

Before the end of 2012, the band will be hitting the road. It won’t be until after Slash finishes touring in support of his upcoming solo album ‘Apocalyptic Love,’ which hits stores on May 22. Weiland said late summer or early fall is a fair timetable for a few live dates.

“We’ve all grown a lot,” the singer says about the past turbulence which split the band up. ”We’re able to put egos and differences and old … conflicts aside and so that’s really cool.”

The band has been on hiatus since 2008 when Weiland was let go after a series of conflicts and his arrest for driving under the influence of drugs. Corey Taylor of Slipknot was mentioned as a potential replacement, but reportedly Slash wasn’t on board with that decision. Just two weeks ago Weiland and Matt Sorum speculated that a reunion would be possible.

A few weeks ago we brought you the story of Loren Huffstetler, who hadn’t missed a day of school her entire life and was on her way to a pretty amazing attendance streak that stretched from kindergarten and elementary school, to middle school and junior high, then high school. Well, the school year has ended now for Loren at the Hudson ISD, and she did it. Perfect attendance feat accomplished.

That’s thirteen years of not missing a day. She’s never taken a sick day or faked the flu to get a day off, so she doesn’t know what it means to make up work or ask a classmate to borrow notes. Pretty impressive!

What’s the secret?

Huffstetler is on the Hudson Highlights drill team, and like any extra-curricular activity, if you miss school you can’t participate. That may have had something to do with the discipline to stay in class. But Huffstetler told the Lufkin Daily News she just doesn’t get sick. And, she says, she likes going to school, and if she stayed home she would probably “just eat all the time and gain weight.”

Huffstetler plans to attend Blinn Junior College this fall. The professors might as well go ahead and mark her down as being in class every day. Congrats Loren!

For a band that began their career by putting out 12 albums in the first 15 years of their career, AC/DC have become almost invisible as a studio entity in the ensuing 22 years. Despite still having massive global appeal, they’ve only released three albums since 1990′s ‘The Razor’s Edge,’ and nothing since 2008′s ‘Black Ice.’

Hopes were raised back in January when singer Brian Johnson said that he hoped the boys would get back together at some point this year. However, a recent interview with guitarist Malcolm Young has put the kibosh on dreams of a new AC/DC album appearing soon.

“You know what Brian’s like,” Young told Classic Rock. “He just says things and then walks away. It’ll be a little while – a year or two anyway.

“I’ve been doing some jamming on some song ideas but I do that all the time, as do the rest of the band,” Young continued. “We are still working. But we had a long rest between ‘Stiff Upper Lip’ and ‘Black Ice,’ so I think we need a couple of years to recuperate and work on it a bit more.”

So that’s the news straight from Malcolm Young’s mouth. Nothing new from AC/DC until 2013 at the earliest. Until then, we’ll just keep playing our copy of ‘Back in Black,’ whose title song recently finished at No. 4 on our list of the Top 100 Classic Rock Songs.

The cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s landmark album ‘Born to Run‘ is one of the most iconic in rock history. But no matter how well you think you know it, chances are good you haven’t seen the image hidden within.

No, it isn’t a scrambled picture of Satan or anything (sorry, paranoid rock-hating parents). According to NJ 101.5, it’s an image inlaid in the leather pickguard on the guitar Bruce is holding in the legendary photo: a man standing under a streetlight, being watched from a nearby window.

A leathersmith embedded the depiction into the pickguard and the image eventually wore away — but now it could be getting new life, thanks to Asbury Park, N.J.’s Dave Petillo.

Here’s a closer look at the original:

If the Petillo name sounds familiar, it’s not just your imagination. Dave’s dad, Dr. Phillip Petillo, founded Petillo Masterpiece Guitars, and made a career of building, repairing and restoring a variety of musical instruments for artists like Springsteen, Tom Petty, Keith Richards, Kiss and the Steve Miller Band.

Dave and his father worked together until Phillip’s death in 2010, and now the younger Petillo has taken on the task of remaking Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’ leather pickguard in much more durable materials — phenol, mother of pearl, dark turquoise, gold flake and Tahitian grey pearl.

He’s also reworked the image, adding the words “Asbury Park” and “New Jersey” and updating the anonymous woman in the window by giving her red hair and the initials PS (which of course stand for Patti Scialfa, Springsteen’s redheaded wife). In addition, you’ll see a silhouette of a saxophone-wielding Clarence Clemons in the ground floor window of the building.

And what did Petillo do with his one-of-a-kind masterpiece? He sent it to Bruce, of course — so maybe you’ll see it on one of his guitars as he makes his way around the world during his current Wrecking Ball tour.
