Is it possible President Obama is looking to sing his way back into the White House this November? Last night the Commander in Chief was joined on stage by all all-star band that included Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Booker T. Jones. It took some convincing, but the President fronted the group of legends, if only for a few bars of ‘Sweet Home Chicago.’

“We were trying to get you to sing that,” one hears Guy saying in the video below. “Because I heard you had sung Al Green, so you started something so you gotta keep it up!”

The song was the conclusion of the ‘In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues’ special that will air on PBS next Monday (Feb. 27) at 9PM ET. Earlier Mr. Obama spoke about the importance of the music.

“The blues reminds us that we’ve been through tougher times before,” Obama said, according to CNN. “That’s why I’m proud to have these artists here not just as a fan but also as the president because their music teaches us that when we find ourselves at a crossroads, we don’t shy away from our problems. We own them. We face up to them. We deal with them. We sing about them. We turn them into art.”

Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band were also on stage for the show closer. After waving off the microphone, the President finally took a hold of it and sang began the chorus of ‘Sweet Home Chicago’ before passing it back to King and exiting with his wife.

The tech company Cisco Systems predicts something we all probably knew was coming. Within the next 5 years, the number of smart phones on earth will eclipse the number of people living here.

We’re just sharing the planet with smartphones!

By 2016, tech giant Cisco Systems estimates there will be 10 billion smartphones and tablets being used on Earth. The world population by that same year, according to the United Nations, will be 7.3 billion.

If you bought a smartphone in 2011 you weren’t alone. There were 490 million of them purchased last year.

Where are all these smart phones going? Who will own them in the future….babies? There will be enough.

It looks like people are owning more than one device. The number of mobile gadgets for every person on Earth in 2016 will equal 1.4.

Most people will be watching videos on those smartphones. The percentage of mobile traffic dedicated to watching videos on portable devices by 2016 will hit 71 percent, up 25 percent from today.

Lola Osbourne, the bulldog best known as Ozzy Osbourne‘s co-star in the hit reality series ‘The Osbournes,’ has died at the age of 12. Ozzy’s son Jack, who seems to have been Lola’s owner, broke the news last night (Feb. 21).

“Lola you were the best friend anyone could ever have. I will love you and miss you always. RIP,” the younger Osbourne tweeted. He later thanked his followers for their well-wishes: “Thank you for all the kind words about @PrincessLolaO it’s nice to know she was loved by so many people.”

As you may already know, in addition to being a TV star, Lola had her own very popular twitter feed, and a presumably final message was posted last night on the account: “Thank you all for your kind words. I’m in a better place now. Heaven needs a new princess.”

When not sleeping, Lola seems to have spent much of her on-air life clawing up furniture or peeing in the Osbourne’s lovely home. Despite that, she was clearly loved by family and friends. Having just lost our beloved pet (and UCR canine editor) Stellah, we have some idea what Jack and family are going through. Our thoughts are with them.

Fans from all walks of life are gearing up for Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s sixth annual Simple Man Cruise, which will set sale over the Halloween weekend.

Like all the band’s previous cruises, the 2012 lineup will leave fans anxiously awaiting the next cruise and the one after that. Joining the legendary rockers for this year’s cruise will be The Doobie Brothers, The Outlaws and Blackberry Smoke, as well as over fifteen other national and regional Southern rock bands that will be announced in the coming weeks.

As previously reported, the cruise aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pearl ship will set sale from Miami, Fla., and make stops in Key West and Great Stirrup Cay on Oct. 27, concluding on Halloween (Oct. 31). In addition to the amazing musical lineup and various shows on the ship, cruise-goers will also have the enjoyment of the all-inclusive meals, access to two pools on board, hot tubs, massive spa, rock climbing wall and a full fitness center.

Chickenfoot has announced a 20-date 2012 U.S. tour in support of their recent album ‘III.’ The trek, dubbed the “Different Devil Tour 2012,” will kick off May 4 in Lake Tahoe, Nev. and wind up June 10 in Los Angeles, Calif.

With founding drummer Chad Smith still caught up on the Red Hot Chili Peppers tour, the lineup for these dates will feature Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and drummer Kenny Aronoff. The tour is named after the band’s current single ‘Different Devil‘ — reviewed here — and will be their first major-scale tour since the release of the new album.

If the reviews from the group’s brief November small club “Road Test” tour are any indication, fans can expect a healthy dose of songs from both Chickenfoot albums, but no tracks from any of the band member’s solo careers or Hagar and Anthony’s time together in Van Halen.

As Hagar explained in a recent interview, “We really do not want to dilute this band and become a Van Halen cover band, or become a Sammy Hagar cover band or a Joe Satriani cover band… The idea is that we are Chickenfoot, and we will stay that.”

Are they going to tour, or not?

The Rolling Stones are celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band this year, and they’ve been offering a lot of hints that they’ll hit the road for another tour. The last road trip came in 2007.

Ronnie Wood has offered more hints that the Stones are on the brink of announcing a new world tour. He says they’re talking about a tour after meeting up for rehearsals before Christmas, and says they’re still in the talking mode. Each week brings a new development, Wood says.

The Toronto Sun reports it’s a matter of tying up loose ends.

So there you have it, more hints and nothing official! Come on Stones, 2012 is wasting away and we’re not coming to a “51st Anniversary Celebration Tour.” We want 50!

Lone Star Charlie’s on Loop 287 near highway 59 north, is being forced to close by the state after more than 30 years in business to make room for a new bypass.

The Lufkin Daily News says the owners are maintaing a positive focus on their relationships with customers, just as they have for the past 30 years.

“Imminent domain” allows the state to shut down the restaurant to make room for the new bypass, so the last day of business for the restaurant will be March 4th. They’ll spend time packing up and clearing out after that.

Will they open up again? The good news is, they’re looking for a new spot. But nothing has been secured and there’s no time table for when Charlie’s might be back up and running.

Two weeks left to stop by and wish them well!

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, known for his outrageous stage persona, revealed himself to be — and this is no surprise for his longtime fans — a thoughtful, caring and productive team member on the debut episode of this season’s ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ tonight. 

As usual, the celebrities on the show were divided up by gender. After comedian Adam Carolla suggested some pretty funny names for their team, the men unanimously decided on… “Unanimous.”  Yes, that’s the name, not the start of an Abbott and Costello routine.

‘American Chopper’ star Paul Teutul, Sr. volunteered to be the team leader on this week’s challenge, which simply involved setting up a temporary sandwich shop and trying to sell their wares for outrageous prices.

Even though he wasn’t in charge, Snider made some smart suggestions, such as using ‘Incredible Hulk’ star Lou Ferrigno, Teutul, Sr. and magician Penn Jillette as the outdoor, attention-grabbing team: “You three are giants, and you’re (to Jillette) a carnival barker.”

He quickly became the team’s narrator, explaining each move they made, and keeping the mood light with quips like, “Hey, Lou, you need to do some push-ups?” and “I think we were breaking several local ordinances…I was having a blast!”

Although it looked like they were having trouble matching the women’s team in terms of sales, an extremely generous mystery donor was good for 90% of the $330,000 winning total raised by the men. That means they got to watch as the women voted off (a seemingly grateful to escape) Cheryl Tiegs while sipping on champagne.

However, it looks like next week’s episode is going to be much tougher on Snider, as a preview showed him dressed up in drag at ‘Medieval Times,’ injuring his finger and undergoing surgery! Stay tuned…

When Yes announced the sudden departure of vocalist Benoit David, it caught many by surprise – including, unfortunately, David himself.

He issued a statement Friday to confirm the news and shed a bit of light regarding his departure. No doubt, it’s a crushing thing for Benoit to lose a dream gig after being a Yes fan for so long, but he certainly handled the events with a lot of class.

Dear YES fans,

As you all know, the final three shows of last year’s European tour were cancelled due to my ill health.  On my return to Canada, I was advised to cease touring, for the foreseeable future, in order to avoid further damage to my voice.  Following this extremely disappointing diagnosis, I had no alternative but to inform my fellow band members that I was unable to confirm my availability for, at least, the forthcoming concerts in New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Although there was no alternative, I did so with a heavy heart as I felt that I was letting everyone down especially those who have supported me since I had the privilege of becoming the band’s vocalist in 2008.  The band members were all very understanding and asked if I would mind being replaced for the April shows – I immediately agreed that this would be the best way forward and gave them my blessing. I was then pleased to learn that Jon Davison would be my replacement as he is an accomplished musician with a fine voice.

I subsequently learnt, from a band member’s interview, that I had officially left Yes and that my departure was permanent.  As this is the situation, everyone should know that I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity I was given and very proud to have contributed to more than 200 concerts and to the ‘Fly From Here’ and ‘In The Present Live From Lyon’ albums.  I would also like to express my appreciation for the support I was given by each member of the band, the fantastic crew, the management and everyone else involved during my time as vocalist in the band.  Finally, to the fans who have applauded my efforts and to those I have had the pleasure of meeting – many thanks, my best wishes and please continue with your support of one of the world’s greatest bands – YES.

Although I need to take it easy for a while, I fully intend to continue with my music career.  In late summer of 2011, I added vocals to Mystery’s forthcoming album ‘The World Is A Game’ – which is at the final stages of mixing and will be available in the near future.  This is my third collaboration with Michel St-Pere, and Mystery, following 2007′s ‘Beneath the Veil of Winter’s Face’ and 2010′s ‘One Among The Living’.

So I guess I will, hopefully, see you somewhere down the road…

In a deal that reportedly took three years to complete, Pete Townshend has sold all the publishing rights to his entire catalog – approximately 400 songs between the Who and his solo career – to the Spirit Music Group, a firm that specializes in placing songs in commercials, movies and television shows. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the arrangement, which was announced last month, is rumored to be as much as $100 million.

“It’s the biggest deal we’ve made so far,” Spirit president Mark Fried told Rolling Stone, apparently stopping just short of calling it a bargain, the best he’s ever had. Fried plans to look deeper into Townshend’s body of work than the classic rock staples like ‘Who Are You’ and ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ that have formed the bulk of product placement in recent years, most famously in CBS’ ‘CSI’ franchise.

Indeed, we can easily envision Townshend’s Top Ten solo hit, ‘Let My Love Open The Door,’ in a commercial for Genie garage door openers. Maybe ‘Christmas’ can replace that annoying instrumental that Lexus bombards us with every December. Poland Spring or Aquafina can find a natural fit in the early-70s live staple ‘Water,’ and hearing ‘Cut My Hair’ coming out of our TVs would undoubtedly get some of us to finally spring for a Flowbee.

Townshend is no stranger to licensing his music. Back in 1967, the Who recorded jingles for Coca-Cola that were briefly used in a UK ad campaign. The band also pioneered the concept of tour sponsorship in 1982 when Schlitz put up good money to have their beer associated with the Who’s first farewell tour, both in print and TV commercials.

Besides, the cherry pie deserves it’s own day. This delectable dessert always comes in second to its apple counterpart and it’s time it got to be first, if only for a day.

The solo album from Eagles guitarist, Joe Walsh, is in the works. It sounds like a star-studded project! Crosby Stills and Nash fans will especially enjoy it.

Walsh told reporters this week, “There’s something for everybody, I think. David Crosby and Graham Nash played on it. Ringo [Starr] played drums on a couple songs. There’s a sampling of people through it.”

Walsh admits he there have been many changes in technology since his last album, Song for a Dying Planet in 1992. We didn’t have iTunes back then, for one thing. The new album is called Analog Man, which may give us a glimpse into Joe’s thoughts on technology. But he says he’ll make adjustments for the digital age.

Analog Man was produced by Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne, and is due out in May.
