Foo Fighters’ CalJam Not Dampened by Security Concerns

The Foo Fighters’ appearance this weekend at the CalJam 17 festival went off with no serious issues reported, amid heightened security in the aftermath of last weekend’s Las Vegas shootings. Fans at the Glen Helen Amphitheater in San Bernardino had been warned to expect delays and more assertive measures after 58 people people were killed and 498 others injured by killer Stephen Paddock, who opened fire on the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

But the San Bernardino Sun reported that most of the CalJam audience accepted the situation in good spirits. “It’s important to be here,” a concertgoer said. “Yes, I was worried about it, but not one person complained while they were waiting in line to get checked into security today. They are here to help keep us safe and I really think people were appreciative of that right now.”

Another admitted he and his friends had considered not attending, but ultimately decided that “music is too important,” adding, “Mass shootings have happened before and people seem to have short memories when it comes to that kind of thing. Sure, people should be worried. But I think even if it had happened yesterday, we’d still be here today – because, like I said, music is too important.”

CalJam 17 was named in honor of the California Jam event that took place in 1974, starring Deep Purple and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It was billed as a launch party for new Foo Fighters album Concrete and Gold and also featured a Foo Fighters museum. Dave Grohl and his band delivered a guest-studded set that included Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry and former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher joining them for a rendition of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” while ‘80s pop star Rick Astley made another appearance to perform his track “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Watch both performances here.
