Anyone travelling portions of Loop 224 in Nacogdoches or Loop 287 in Lufkin could be in for some delays beginning Tuesday and lasting throughout the remainder of this week.

According to a release from the Texas Department of Transportation, motorists will see a closure on Loop 224 in Nacogdoches Tuesday as contractors work to repair the bridge approach slab over FM 225. Bridge crews will close a small part of US 59/Loop 224 on Tuesday in the northbound lanes. Traffic will be detoured to the FM 225 exit ramp and then redirected back to the loop. The closure on Tuesday will last about eight hours.

Motorists are asked to stay alert as traffic is funneled to one lane before exiting US 59 onto the FM 225 exit ramp. Delays should be expected and drivers are urged to reduce speed as they enter the work zone. Be alert to moving traffic control, equipment, workers and flaggers through the area.

In Lufkin, motorists can expect to see lane closures in several areas this week on Loop 287 as crews continue to repair metal beam guard fencing and upgrade bridge railing.

Beginning Tuesday, work is planned at the U-turn at Tulane over 287. On Wednesday, crews will move to the opposite side of Tulane to complete work on the U-turn. Work at each location should be completed by the end of each day.

On Thursday, work is expected to begin on US 59 South near Walmart and the Whitehouse exit. Crews will be working on the access road to remove and replace guardrail. Work at this location is expected to take several days to complete and lane closures will vary as work progresses.

“These locations are high traffic areas, especially mid-day near the restaurants and shopping centers,” said Rhonda Oaks, Lufkin District public information officer. “We urge motorists to reduce their speed, stay very alert to nearby traffic as well as workers and equipment that are working nearby the lanes of traffic. Motorists should plan ahead for delays in these areas during peak travel hours.”
