Gov. Greg Abbott Issues Statement on Fatal Shooting of Texas Tech Police Department Officer

Following the shooting death of a Texas Tech University police officer Monday evening, Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement on social media.

Gov. Greg Abbott’s statement in full:

First and foremost, our hearts go out to the family of the police officer killed at Texas Tech University. I have spoken to Chancellor Robert Duncan to offer my condolences, and I have mobilized the Texas Department of Public Safety to offer any assistance to the Lubbock Police Department. As the Texas Tech campus deals with this heartbreaking tragedy, Cecilia and I pray for the continued safety of the students and the entire community.

Around 8 p.m. Monday evening, officers with the Texas Tech University Police Department brought Texas Tech freshman Hollis A. Daniels to the station after a welfare check turned up drug paraphernalia. At the station, Daniels allegedly pulled out a gun and shot an officer in the head, killing the officer. He then fled the scene.

Daniels was later caught by a Texas Tech police officer who tackled him to the ground, Everything Lubbock reported. After Daniels’ apprehension, the lockdown at University Medical Center and Texas Tech University campus was lifted.
