Metallica will always be known as a Bay Area band, but frontman James Hetfield currently calls Colorado home — a move he made because, as the guitarist admitted during a recent visit to Joe Rogan's podcast, he no longer felt like he truly belonged.

"I kind of got sick of the Bay Area, the attitudes of the people there, a little bit," Hetfield told Rogan (via Blabbermouth). "They talk about how diverse they are, and things like that, and it's fine if you're diverse like them. But showing up with a deer on the bumper doesn't fly in Marin County. My form of eating organic doesn't vibe with theirs."

While hastening to point out that he's glad there's a place like San Francisco — and he admits he loves the convenience of living in a tech hub — Hetfield said he couldn't get past feeling like an outsider there, even if it was all in his head.

"I probably made it up in my head a little bit, 'cause I'm pretty good at that," he added. "I'm pretty creative, and I can start fights with myself in my head all the time. But there was, there was just a – I don't know, I felt that there was an elitist attitude there, that if you weren't their way politically – their way environmentally, all of that – that you were looked down upon."

Drawn to Vail by his wife, who grew up in the area, Hetfield found himself feeling freer to indulge in the pursuits that fulfill him — including growing his own fruits and vegetables and hunting animals for food. It's a lifestyle he understands isn't for everyone, even some members of his own family.

"I respect people that don't want the blood; they don't want all that scene. They would rather see their meat, or whatever it is, show up in a nice cellophane package and it's handed to them. They don't wanna know how it got there. I respect that," Hetfield said. "My kids are like that: They don't wanna see it going on. But I want to be as close to the earth, I want to be as part of it as possible. I want to be part of every bit of it and respect it."
