Meet Beau, a Labrador who cannot only tell you how many points are in a touch-down, safety and field goal, but he can add them all together along with being able to do subtraction, division and calculate square roots.

David Madsen, a retired AT&T executive, claims he taught Beau how to math using treats, rewarding him when the number of barks matched the number of dog biscuits. “He caught on that rewards were associated with the correct number of barks.”

Madsen denies that Beau’s talent is simply another case of the Clever Hans effect — an animal responding to subconscious cues from its trainer. He says he does not signal Beau “in any fashion,” and claims others have quizzed Beau while he was elsewhere.
