‘Kong: Skull Island’ Cinematographer Larry Fong Shooting Shane Black’s ‘The Predator’

Just last week we finally got out first real look at Kong: Skull Island, which showed us that the new King Kong movie, among other things, will look incredible. Which is good news for Shane Black, who has just acquired Skull Island’s cinematographer, Larry Fong, for his Predator sequel.

According to /Film, while Skull Island is his most recent endeavor, Fong is probably most well-known for being the cinematographer behind Zack Snyder’s films, which, okay, say what you want about Zack Snyder, but visually his movies are stunning. Batman v. Superman was ultimately a disappointment, but that opening scene showing the death of the Wayne parents in slow motion is really something else. 300 and Sucker Punch were light on plot, but heavy on some really extraordinary camerawork. Fong is a real talent behind the camera, and The Predator will be all the better for him.

Black has also been saying some really encouraging things about his movie’s plot: it’ll keep to the scary yet funny spirit of the original, and will take plenty of cues from the first movie without being a complete remake.

I think the Predator movies have slightly veered from typical sci-fi in that there is a sort of thriller aspect to them. I think it should be scary, I think it should be funny, and I think ultimately it should be wondrous and about perceiving things that human beings very seldom get a chance to see… I don’t mean movie audiences, I mean characters in the movie. I’m not saying the movie will be nothing anyone’s seen before (laughs).

The Predator will star Boyd Holbrook as the main character (who is not Dutch and not a replacement for Arnold Schwarzenegger), alongside Olivia Munn, and will hit theaters February 9, 2018.
