Lufkin already has an ordinance that bans smoking at city parks, and limits smoking to restaurants with designated public areas.  Under a new proposed ban that the city council looked at this week, the ban would stretch wider and there would be no smoking at city or county facilities, hospitals, stores, or restaurants.Nacogdoches has had a similar ban in place since 2008.

The Lufkin ban hasn't been finalized yet, and in fact it will take a vote by city council to make it official.  This week the council took public comments and they're in the exploration phase of the potential ban.

Lufkin high school students from the Drug-Free All Stars Program voiced their opinion in favor of the ban this week.  Others in favor offer the opinion that second hand smoke is bad for public health.  Opponents of the ban worry that a wider ban infringes on their rights. Other Texas cities like Dallas and Houston currently have city-wide smoking bans.
