Marvel Has Considered Creating Its Own Comic-Con
No trip to San Diego Comic-Con is complete without a visit to Marvel’s booth, where you can check out props, get an autograph, and enjoy a presentation or two. But the massive expansion and success of Comic-Con in recent years has inspired some brands to splinter off and form their own fan conventions. And in the world of comics, nothing is bigger than Marvel right now (sorry DC). So it stands to reason Marvel might decide to start their own event, which they control completely, and reap all of the financial benefits from.
Over the years there have been discussions about that. I think what we try to do occasionally in San Diego we're very proud of and think is a fun tradition. That being said, I think [Star Wars] Celebration is pretty amazing. I've been to a few Celebrations and the idea of doing something like that ... I think we have enough content, and enough fans, and enough ideas that we could easily do something like that, I'm just not sure where or when.
This is not surprising. Comic-Con is a massive, sprawling affair. It certainly is a great place to blast out some news; the fans are there and those that can’t be there are paying attention online. It’s also grown so large that the experience on the ground is often frustrating (and also incredibly smelly). And since it’s not Marvel’s event, there’s not much they can do about the fan experience. If they had their own thing, it would be theirs to shape however they wished (and also to charge whatever they wished to get in to it). My opinion, with no insider knowledge: I think you’ll see a Marvel Con of some kind within a decade.
