Fans who ordered the CD of Nine Inch Nails' Not the Actual Events EP were promised to receive an unnamed "physical component." According to those who have received their package, that component turned out to be a black powder.

As NME is reporting, the CD arrived in an envelope with a sticker bearing the warning, "The be read in its entirety before opening. Actions have consequences! N.T.A.E. may contain subversive elements that produce feelings of euphoria and may be harmful and unsettling to the consumer. Likewise, this physical package may lead to unrealized expectations or unexpected results upon opening. Caution should be exercised with both. And this is important ... This will make a mess. By opening this envelope in any way, you assume all risks to your person and/or property, and waive any claim against The Null Corporation, any of its subsidiaries or affiliated entities from any and all damages or harm you may incur."

Upon opening the product, people found a few photos covered with black powder that soon wound up getting all over the place. Many posted pictures of what they received on social media.

Not the Actual Events arrived digitally shortly before the end of last year, fulfilling a promise that Trent Reznor made to have something new under the Nine Inch Nails moniker out in 2016. “It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make,” he said. “It’s an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story.”

After spending much of the last few years working on scoring movies, Reznor has promised to make up for lost time by releasing "two new major works" as Nine Inch Nails in 2017. His partner in film work, Atticus Ross, has now been made a full-fledged member of the band, with Reznor calling the move "an acknowledgement of respect and importance…and it’s accurate.” It's unknown how much Nine Inch Nails will tour in support of all this new music, but he is booked to play the Panorama Music Festival in New York on July 30.
