A Texas teacher is getting a lot of attention for a "no homework" policy that she says she's planning to stick to all year long.

She wants kids to play outside, have dinner with family, and get to bed early instead of burying noses in the books at home.  Think it'll catch on?

USA Today picked up on the story after one parent posted the 2nd grade teacher's letter on social media.  In the letter, Mrs. Young says, "Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year,” and then she adds, “Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance..."

Second graders aren't usually too loaded down with homework.  But if your second grader is anything like mine was last year, there is usually just enough to provide the opportunity to complain!

Does homework at that age instill good habits and prep them for more homework later, or is it just too much?

Kids must love this no-homework rule.  As this idea continues to gain momentum, we'll see if East Texas teachers follow up with the same strategy.  And we'll watch for Mrs. Young on The Ellen Show. Something tells us it's just a matter of time.
