Primus are set to release their first studio album since 2011's Green Naugahyde. The Desaturating Seven arrives Sept. 29 and you can listen to the first single, "The Seven," above. They also announced a three-week tour of the U.S.

As bassist-singer Les Claypool said in a press release, the record was inspired by Ul Del Rico's The Rainbow Goblins, a book that he used to read to his children about seven goblins who "pull the color out of the world."

"The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately and I thought, 'This would make good fodder for a piece of music,'" he said. "The use of color and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony and deceit vs unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it's about time someone brought 'Goblin Rock' back to the fold."

The Desaturating Seven is the second Primus record since Tim "Herb" Alexander, who drummed on their seminal albums, returned to the lineup in 2014 for Primus & the Chocolate Factory With the Fungi Ensemble, their re-imagining of the soundtrack of the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Alexander hadn't played on a Primus studio effort of original material since 1995's Tales from the Punchbowl.

The band has two vinyl pressings available for pre-order on their website. In addition to one with the colors of the rainbow splattered on clear vinyl, they're offering a limited-edition (2,000 copies) white vinyl disc. A deluxe bundle, limited to 500 units, adds an autographed copy of The Rainbow Goblins, t-shirt and a hand-numbered autographed poster to the fan's choice of format for the album.

In addition to their current tour with Clutch, Primus announced a new set of dates, that they're dubbing "Ambushing the Storm," beginning Oct. 20 in San Antonio. They'll stay on the road through Nov. 13 at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans. They also have two shows at the Wiltern in Los Angeles on Dec. 29-30.
