Ronda Rousey’s ‘Road House’ Remake Taps…The Director of ‘The Notebook’?

A remake of Road House is a little questionable, but when you throw UFC badass Ronda Rousey into the role originated by Patrick Swayze, things get a bit interesting. And things just got a whole lot more interesting as the project has found an unlikely director in Nick Cassavetes, son of iconic director John Cassavetes and director of…The Notebook. Of all things.

THR reports that Cassavetes has signed on to direct MGM’s remake of 1989 classic Road House with Rousey playing the lead role of Dalton, originally portrayed by the late Patrick Swayze. Cassavetes is best known for directing The Notebook, the romantic drama starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel. Cassavetes has also directed John Q, Alpha Dog, and more recently the revenge rom-com The Other Woman.

Add his filmography up and you have drama, romance, gritty drama, and lots of experience in directing leading women. So the math sort of checks out?

The original Road House centered on Swayze’s Dalton, a rough and tough New York bouncer who is hired to keep a rowdy, smalltown bar and its patrons in line, but things get a bit out of hand when a criminal enters the fray — and a throat famously gets ripped. The idea of watching Rousey rip out some dude’s throat sounds entertaining, and now you’ll be able to watch Rousey rip out some dude’s throat from the director of The Notebook. How romantic!
