SFC Retired Samuel Gardner served over 20 years of honorable service for the US Army; he was born in Houston, Texas. His military career began in October 1976 enlisted in the Regular Army as Quartermaster Supply Specialist. He attended Basic at Fort Knox, Kentucky and AIT-Advance Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia.

SFC Gardner/retired has served in numerous army units including the 1st and 15th Infantry, Third Infantry Division, Kitzingen and Schweinfurt, Germany of which assigned twice during his service with the United States Army. First and Eighty-Seventh Infantry, Baumholder, Germany. First Cavalry Division, 10th, 12th Cavalry, Fort Hood, Texas. Ninth Area Finance Group, Ninth Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington. He served as the Supply Sergeant with the 4th ROTC Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington assigned to Washington State University, Pullman, Washington. SFC Gardner has several deployments, a veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Storm Iraqi. Veteran of Operation Provide Democracy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as the Battalion Logistics Non-Commissioning Officer, providing humanitarian support to the Haitian Nation.

SFC Gardner retired at the Presidio of San Francisco, California  Immediately upon retirement in 1999 SFC Gardner began work with the State of Texas with Workforce Solutions of East Texas and Veterans Commission as the Veteran Employment Representative serving Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Tyler, Angelina and Shelby counties respectfully for 9 years. Prior to coming to the Military Science Department, Stephen F Austin State University, Supply Technician, SFC Gardner/Retired was a Federal employee at Alcorn State University, Mississippi in conjunction SFC Gardner is currently recruiting veterans for home basketball games here at SFA

SFC Gardner/retired decorations includes the Meritorious Service Medal (2OLC), Army Commendation Medal (5OLC), Army Achievement Medal (6OLC), Good Conduct Medal (5th award), National Defense Service Medal (with 1 Bronze Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal , Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal (with 1 Bronze Star).  Attended and completed the Battle Staff Course at the Sergeant Major Academy, Fort Bliss, Texas. NCO Professional Development Ribbon (with Numeral 2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Serves Ribbon (with Numeral 3). An active supporting member of the American Legion, and Veteran of Foreign Wars.

SFC Gardner was honored at the SFA basketball Game versus Towson State University 07 Dec 2013 @ 8pm
