Ski Resorts Need More Snow

If you're planning a vacation to ski country, you might have to wait.  Thanksgiving weekend is usually a big one for ski resorts, but most of them had to delay openings this year because of a lack of snow.

Some of the projected openings are in mid to late December now.

With vacationers looking for the first fresh powder of the season, ski resorts usually aim to capitalize on the the 4-day Thanksgiving holiday by targeting that as opening weekend.  But since it's been so warm in Idaho this fall, the ski resorts are lacking snow - both nature-made and man-made.  It has to be cold for the resorts to make their own snow, and conditions haven't been right just yet.

Ski Idaho says Brundage Mountain's projected opening was Friday, November 25th, but instead the Brundage website says they held a Pray for Snow party.

It's not just Idaho seeing delayed openings. Ski resorts in Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico are waiting on more snow too.  A few resorts have opened up in New York and West Virginia.

Colorado has the most resorts open now, but it's usually only a few of the lifts that are running and the resorts are not fully operational yet.  The resorts with at least a few lifts running include Arapahoe Basin, Crested Butte, Copper Mountain, Wolf Creek, Snowmass, and Winter Park.

The snow will come eventually, so even though Thanksgiving weekend may not have been the ideal time to ski, your Christmas ski vacation could be perfect.  The ski resorts are sure hoping so.
