‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ Will Take Place 30 Years After ‘Return of the Jedi’; Will Follow a Trio of New Characters

Star Wars: Episode 7‘ hasn’t been very forthcoming when it comes to details. We sorta knew what was happening, but then J.J. Abrams completely scrapped the existing script by Michael Arndt to start fresh with Lawrence Kasdan (‘The Empire Strikes Back’), calling into question everything we thought we knew. But, now we actually have some confirmed story facts for the upcoming sequel. ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ will take place 30 years after the events of ‘Return of the Jedi’ and will follow a trio of young characters.

Today was Disney’s annual shareholders meeting and president Bob Iger did not disappoint when it came to updating on their upcoming roster of movies. In addition to news on Pixar‘s upcoming sequels (including ‘The Incredibles 2′ and ‘Cars 3′), Iger casually dropped this ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ bomb.

Of course, this isn’t a huge bombshell, but c’mon, we’re starving for actual ‘Star Wars’ news! J.J. Abrams has been casting this thing for years now with little progress, so pardon us if we get all frothy over a confirmed timeline.

It’s approximately 30 years since ‘Return of the Jedi’ was released (1983), so the thirty-year difference makes sense and indicates that time has transpired as normal in the ‘Star Wars’ universe.

Also, confirmed are the “very familiar faces” which we know to include R2-D2 and Chewbacca and can assume will also include Luke, Leia and Han Solo. That we also have a trio of new characters seems to indicate that perhaps Jesse Plemons and John Boyega are actually up for different characters. A male and female character (long-rumored to be the children of either Luke or Leia and Han), plus one additional male character, which gives it a very similar character structure to the original trilogy.

Whatever is happening on ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′, a formal announcement should be coming shortly as Disney also confirmed the film’s start date in an announcement:

Disney and Lucasfilm are excited to announce that principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, will commence May 2014, and will be based at London’s historic Pinewood Studios.

‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ opens in theaters on December 18, 2015.
