If any rumor runs longer than word of a new Star Wars trilogy, it might be the promise of a live-action TV series set in the same galaxy far, far away, one which has been through multiple iterations over the last decade. Now, Lucasfilm bosses and other insiders officially shoot down hopes for a Star Wars tie-in on TV, not wanting the follow the Marvel path.

An in-depth report at TVLine sees everyone from ABC boss Paul Lee to J.J. Abrams to an anonymous insider weighing in on the possibility, all of whom seem to suggest that no current plans for any live-action Star Wars TV series have reached any active phase of development.

Previously, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy suggested at least some possibility of looking into George Lucas’ old Star Wars: Underworld scripts, while ABC boss Paul Lee says that despite his interest, “they are focused on their movies, so we don’t have any plans at the moment.” Added representation for Lucasfilm “Our current focus for TV is on animation [Star Wars Rebels, etc.].”

Most intriguingly, an anonymous “industry power-player” even praised the decision not to develop a TV tie-in, citing the difficulty involved with Marvel managing its many branches:

It’s smart brand management [not to do one]. I imagine they’re looking to avoid the Marvel-ization of the franchise.

Hopes not sufficiently dashed? Okay! J.J. Abrams too weighed in on the idea, suggesting that Bad Robot wouldn’t have any involvement, should Lucasfilm ever move forward on a live-action Star Wars series. “Since my TV deal is at [Warner Bros.], it is unlikely that [my production company] Bad Robot will be involved in any Star Wars television projects,” said the Force Awakens director.

Said quotes might not prove the final nail in a Star Wars TV series coffin, though between a revamped release date for Episode VIII, this year’s Rogue One spinoff and a Han Solo prequel to follow, the brain trust appears to have its hands full. Not to mention, Star Wars Rebels is certainly keeping TV fans happy, but are our hopes officially dashed?
