Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most popular franchises of all time, and yet only one out of its four movies are remembered in a positive light. Gore Verbinski’s The Curse of the Black Pearl was a throwback to old school popcorn blockbusters, a family-friendly adventure full of expertly choreographed action, led by a rebellious hero with some romance. The original hit led to three sequels that broke multiple box office records for the Disney property, yet the Pirates franchise only soured in the mouths of critics.

Johnny Depp Makes Surprise Appearance on ‘Pirates’ Ride at Disneyland
Johnny Depp needs some public image rehabilitation, and badly. When it came out last year that he had physically abused former spouse Amber Heard, a dark and sickly pallor was cast over the heretofore beloved actor’s profile. It isn’t helping that he hasn’t been in a good movie since 2011 (Rango, though Verbinski’s follow-up The Lone Ranger has its supporters), and hasn’t been in a really profitable one since 2014’s Into the Woods. Just about a week ago, we shared the first video released by Coachella, a live performance of Zimmer’s soundtrack from Interstellar. And now the festival has followed up with a second performance, this time of Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight (via Heroic Hollywood). If you’ve ever wanted to watch one of your favorite film composers shred like a rock star, well, here’s your chance (at least until John Williams decides to shock us all with his Mad Max: Fury Road-esque guitar gimp suit).

Javier Bardem was looking pretty rough in the first trailer for the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. His ghost pirate killer Captain Salazar had cracked drywall for a face with some nasty black goo dripping from his lips. In the new trailer for the latest film in the Disney franchise we get to see him with some life back in his face (literally), and another Pirates character looking mighty youthful.

Before it was a massive movie franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean was just another ride at Disneyland. But, it wasn't just any ride. Built in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean was actually the last ride that was personally overseen by Walt Disney before his death in 1966. This is just one of the facts packed into the latest episode of You Think You Know Movies, which sets sail with Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean!
