James Cameron has been toying around with a Terminator 2: Judgement Day 3D release for some time. Last year he announced that he was working on it, and that it would arrive in theaters around the time of the film’s 25th anniversary. Seeing as that deadline’s come and gone, it looked like a remaster was not to be. Fortunately, according to Collider, Cameron is still working on it, as announced on the Terminator 2 official Facebook page yesterday with a cool new poster:

Some might think 3D re-releases are superfluous, and sure, if a film works just fine in two dimensions, why muck it up by adding a third? But James Cameron has proven that he knows exactly what he’s doing when it comes to 3D and, listen, for all of Avatars faults, you have to admit it looks stunning. He’s partnered with DMG Entertainment and StudioCanal for the remaster (the same companies that worked on Avatar and the Jurassic Park 3D release).

Back in 2014 at the Hero Complex Film Festival Cameron spoke about why he would want to release T2 in 3D (but not the first Terminator). Via /Film:

Terminator 1 I don’t think so because you could upgrade it to 3D but it’s still pretty gritty, available light photography, low budget filmmaking ... Terminator 2 is a more polished film and, I think, it has a kind of timeless appeal. If there was someone who was interested in doing that, and we could make a good case for the business model like, perhaps let’s say, it’s never been on screens in China which in the next few years is about to become the biggest market for films worldwide. That alone might justify the cost of a conversion which might be 6 or 7 million dollars.

T2 was never released in China, and if the recent overseas box-office successes of films like Pacific Rim, Warcraft, the Transformers franchise are any indication, it's clear that T2 would fit right in with the rest of the high-grossing action blockbusters. One way or another, T2 will be back.
