Unfortunately for fans of The CW’s The Flash, Grant Gustin won’t be making the leap to the big screen for Warner Bros. and DC’s upcoming movie. Ezra Miller will be tackling the role of Barry Allen and his lightning-fast superhero alter ego in the DC movie universe, and while it’ll still be a couple of years before he makes his big screen debut, the actor is opening up about the exciting new role and what he hopes to do with it.

In an interview with EW, the star of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and We Need to Talk About Kevin star spoke about playing the Scarlet Speedster in the upcoming DC films. Miller believes complexity and humanity are important traits when developing a good superhero character:

Well, [first] it’s going to be a movie, I’d like for it to be an exploration of a human being, a multi-dimensional human being, to speak…Wow, I just made such a pun, without meaning to….I’d like the character to have many dimensions. But really, I’d like him to have the usual dimensions we know and love, and then some extra ones that are part of the amazing consideration of this superhero. I hope to realize him as a person, and I think what’s most exciting for me in superhero mythologies is when we feel the humanity of someone who is heroic — or the heroism of someone who is a flawed, deeply human person.

As you can see, Miller couldn’t offer too much, though his approach to the character appears to be in line with DC and WB’s more “grounded” and gritty superhero universe concept.

Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) is writing and directing The Flash solo movie, which hits theaters on March 23, 2018. Miller will make his debut as the speedy hero in Justice League: Part One, which arrives in 2017.
