Nacogdoches Church's Thanksgiving Sculpture Lands At SFA Gardens

The SFA Gardens have been putting a lot of extra effort into their sculpture game recently, especially with the return of the Sculpture in the SFA Gardens where artists have their work on display. However, the gardens just received a donated sculpture from one of the Nacogdoches churches, and people have been discussing the history behind it.

Come to the Table Tree Donated to SFA Gardens

A picture was posted to the SFA Gardens Facebook page showing a large, metal sculpture of a tree, complete with dangling metal leaves. The post stated that the tree was a "donation from the Fredonia Hill Baptist Church." This is what the sculpture looks like right now, currently sitting in the Ruby Mize Azalea Garden:

The picture doesn't really do the sculpture justice. It's actually a massive tree.

After the announcement and picture was posted on Facebook, people began discussing the origins of that tree, and the story came to light.

Origin of the Come to the Table Tree Sculpture

It turns out that the tree was sculpted for an event that Fredonia Hill Baptist Church put together in November 2012. The event was called "Come to the Table". The church set up a large tent in Pioneer Park on the southside of Nacogdoches and held their Thanksgiving luncheon in the park. Not only did church members attend, but the community members came out as well.

Attendees were given metal leaves - like the ones that you can see in the picture - and engraving pens to write on them, then the leaves were placed on the tree. Some of the leaves have since fallen off, but several are still attached. The tree was actually the centerpiece of the entire tent. Take a look:

Fredonia Hill is doing some work on their campus that required them to remove the sculpture, so instead of dismantling the tree and doing away with it, it was donated to the SFA Gardens so that people could still go by and enjoy it.
