Cushing VFD BigCat Challenge and Crawfish Boil is Coming Soon
Here in Deep East Texas, like lots of other rural places in Texas, most of our towns and communities have volunteer fire departments, because they don't have the means to pay their firefighters and crews full salaries. That means that they also have to raise their own funds for equipment - gear, trucks, radios, etc. Throughout the year, you can see all kinds of creative fundraisers take place.
One of our local VFDs has one - or actually multiple fundraisers coming up, and they're pulling out all the stops to make them memorable.
Cushing VFD is Hosting the BigCat Challenge & Crawfish Boil
Starting Thursday, April 30th, the Cushing Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting their 3rd annual Angelina River Catfish Tournament. There will be multiple categories for participants to take part in - Heavyweight 5 Stringer, Big Blue, Big Op and Lightweight 5 Stringer, and the total entry fee is $175 per team. There's also a youth division that's part of the tournament, too. The BigCat Challenge will go through Sunday, May 3rd at 2:00 when final weigh-in takes place. All of the tournament information can be found on the Cushing Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page.
But there's more than just the fishing tournament going on for Cushing VFD. On Saturday, May 2nd, they'll be hosting a crawfish boil to raise money as well. This is the first time that they've done this, and it'll be taking place along with the catfish tournament. According to the Cushing VFD Facebook page, they'll be at the fire department station at 783 Walnut Street in Cushing selling crawfish by the pound, along with all the regular good stuff (corn, potatoes, etc.).
