This is the final trailer for Dark Phoenix — which means it’s almost certainly the final trailer for any X-Men movie for a long time. Now that Disney owns Fox, Marvel has control of the X-Men film franchise for the first time since the 1990s. And Disney and Marvel have made no secret of the fact that eventually they would like to introduce their own version of the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Which means that this movie, Dark Phoenix, will be the swan song for this particular iteration of the X-Men series. (Yes, there is also a New Mutants movie due later this summer too, but that doesn’t appear to have much connection to the main X-Men franchise.)

I guess if you’ve got nothing to lose and no future to plan for, you can go out with a bang, so Dark Phoenix could potentially very violent and not very forgiving for our heroes. The last time Fox told the Dark Phoenix Saga in movie form both Cyclops and Professor X kicked the bucket (in X-Men: The Last Stand). This time, it looks like Mystique and maybe Magneto are both done for based on this trailer, where Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey goes very bad.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we've come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet -- one of their own.

Dark Phoenix opens in theaters on June 7.
