Downtown Mural In Lufkin Gets Some Uh…Ventilation And Natural Light?
So what is going on in the old Lufkin Parks and Recreation building in Lufkin? I don't have all the answers, but I do know they have been working on it for some time.
Today Lufkinites will notice the mural for the now defunct Lufkin Conroe Telephone Exchange has gotten a bit of a, how can I put this gently, breezeway?
Windows have been revealed during renovations. The plan is to turn the building into loft apartments upstairs, and office space for rent downstairs.
The mural includes a portrait of E.J. Mantooth, and A.M. Denman. You might notice that those are names of streets in the area. That's not a coincidence.
The mural most likely painted by Lance Hunter also depicts (depicted?) a snow-covered house, a woman sitting at a switchboard, and a woman on a phone.
The mural hasn't always been there, the building wasn't always the Lufkin Parks and Recreation Building. It might not ever look exactly the same at the corner of Frank and 1st Street in Lufkin again.
At this time, there is no word on if they are going to preserve the mural, but I am sure the city is involved, and this will be handled with the utmost care.
I am also fairly certain that the building had windows there at one time, and these aren't new openings. Most all the buildings downtown did, and they weren't always smooshed together. Inside the buildings you will see lots of covered old windows.
The inside of the building is getting lots up updates. There is new wood going in all the time.
I know it's most likely been a labor of love keeping that old building in one piece. I just didn't know how many pieces would have to go to make it work.
