Last Week, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Oklahoma warned residents of East Texas of multiple rounds of severe weather from April 8-10. Tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds, and flooding were all in play.

I was most concerned about the possibility of numerous tornadoes dropping down across the Pineywoods. Thankfully, only a couple of twisters were reported, and damage from those was minimal.

Torrential Downpours Bring Catastrophic Flooding

For this severe weather outbreak, it was the torrential downpours that brought the damage.

Throughout the day on Tuesday, heavy rounds of rain brought high water issues for Shreveport, Longview, Carthage, Timpson and other locations from Nacogdoches County and northeastward.

Then, overnight Tuesday, catastrophic flooding occurred when massive amounts of rain fell over portions of Jasper and Tyler Counties. The Kirbyville area was especially hard hit with some reports of more than 20 inches of rain falling in less than 6 hours.

Water was reported in numerous homes and businesses in that area. Even graveyards suffered damage as a result of the flooding.

Here are some of the 3-day rainfall totals according to Weather Underground.

  • Kirbyville - 16.66 (some reports of more than 20 inches)
  • Buckhorn (Newton County) 12.02

Thankfully, for East Texas, it looks like the brunt of that severe weather should stay to our west and north.
