Lufkin Wreck With Multiple Big Rigs Brings Major Delays to Hwy 59
If you have travel plans on Highway 59 between Lufkin and Diboll, you may want to alter plans as a long clean-up process is underway following a major Wednesday morning wreck.
According to a press release, Lufkin Police and Fire Departments are on the scene of a significant accident involving two 18-wheelers on U.S. Highway 59 South, near the Southwood Drive/Farm to Market Road 324 intersection.
The crash occurred just before 8 a.m., resulting in extensive damage to two of the trucks. One of the vehicles, which was hauling 25-foot steel pipes, lost its load on the highway.
Authorities on the scene are reporting that clearing the scene will take a considerable amount of time. Motorists are advised to slow down in the area, expect delays, and avoid the vicinity, if possible.
Southbound traffic is being rerouted into one of the northbound lanes. Keep in mind that much of Highway 59 between Lufkin and Diboll, especially near the Angelina County Airport, is under construction, so could cause extra delays and issues if traffic gets backed up further south.
Northbound lanes of Highway 59 are also expected to experience closures and delays as heavy-rotation wreckers are brought in for cleanup. Southwood Drive at U.S. Highway 59 southbound is closed to through traffic at this time.
The latest news is good concerning injuries. One of the truck drivers has been transported to a local hospital. He was conscious, alert, and walking, with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
