East Texas Events Give Special Needs Kids An Opportunity to Fish

C.A.S.T. (Catch A Special Thrill) for Kids is a public charity that was formed in 1991 to join volunteers who love to fish with children who have special needs and disadvantages for a day of fishing in the outdoors. There are two C.A.S.T. for Kids events that are coming up on Lake Sam Rayburn. Here are some of the details.

Keith Combs Sam Rayburn Slam

One of the most successful professional anglers to hail from East Texas, Combs will be hosting this event on September 16 at Humphrey Family Pavilion in Brookeland. This will be a free on-shore fishing event for children with special needs. The event is open to all children, ages 6-18, no matter their disability. All child participants must be accompanied by their parent/guardian for the entire event.

Upon arrival at the event, we recommend the first stop be the restroom. Then proceed to the registration table to check-in and pick up your child’s free fishing pole, tackle box, and event t-shirt and cap. The event coordinator will then pair volunteers with the children and their parent/guardian for about 3 hours of fishing, and you will proceed to the water. After the fishing is completed, lunch is provided for all.

An awards ceremony where each child is celebrated follows lunch. Please try to stay for the awards so your child can be cheered for and celebrated. Most C.A.S.T. for Kids events conclude by 1 pm. Participants must pre-register online and the space is limited to the first 40 children who register.

C.A.S.T. for KIDS on Sam Rayburn in Zavalla

This event will be held on October 28 at Cassels Boykin on Lake Sam Rayburn. This will be a free boating and fishing event for children with special needs. The event is open to all children, ages 6-18, no matter their disability. Find out more details here.

A Need for Volunteers, Boats and Boaters

Volunteers are an integral part of these C.A.S.T. for Kids fishing events. Plus, experienced boaters with a boat to help children plus a parent or guardian learn proper fishing techniques from a boat are also in need.
