Lufkin and Nacogdoches, Texas Are Now Under a Tornado Watch
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch until 9 p.m. for much of Deep East Texas. Counties in this watch include:
- Angelina
- Nacogdoches
- Houston
- Trinity
- Cherokee
- Rusk
- Shelby
- Panola
- San Augustine
Polk, Tyler, Jasper, Newton, and Sabine Counties are NOT INCLUDED in this tornado watch.
A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of a tornado during the time period.
As of 2:45 p.m., a developing line of thunderstorms was indicated from Canton to Corsicana to Killeen. This line was moving eastward.
A dozen or more states in the South and in the Midwest are in areas where severe weather and/or tornado outbreaks are either happening or are expected. Many of these tornadoes will be EF2 or stronger (111+ mph).
A significant tornado tore through North Little Rock and the adjoining neighborhoods earlier this afternoon.
Even though the majority of the severe weather will be north of Lufkin/Nacogdoches, damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, hail, and twisters are all possible throughout this afternoon and evening across the Pineywoods.
Have a plan in place in the event of a tornado near your residence. Do not stay in a mobile home. Go to an interior room with no walls connected to the exterior of your home. Many times this would be an interior closet or in the bathtub in a bathroom. Wear a helmet, if possible, and take cushions and pillows for protection.
