According to research done by 844SeeMike, one city in Texas lands in the top five most dangerous spring break destinations. South Padre Island came in fourth in the study thanks to several factors.

The reasons why South Padre found itself so far up the list are:

  • DUI incidents
  • Pedestrian risks
  • Cyclist risks
  • Hit-and-run risks

South Padre Island scored incredibly high in those four areas, and it was enough to put them in the top five. It wasn't all bad news, though. Risk of homicide, alcohol-related fatalities, and drowning risk were areas they scored very low.

Is South Padre Island Really That Dangerous?

It's hard to argue with numbers, but I have a hard time imagining South Padre is so dangerous. I've spent plenty of time there, and I love it. One thing I've never done, though, is go at spring break. I've actually tried to avoid it.

It does make sense that some places would appear to be more dangerous around spring break. The sudden influx of drunk twenty-somethings cutting loose and making bad decisions they probably won't remember does seem like a recipe for possible disaster.

No matter where you go on spring break, be safe and smart when you go. Spring break is a lot more fun when you come back with fun stories and nothing tragic.
