Living off-grid is something that has come a lot in recent years. It really became popular in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. Ever since, people are constantly dreaming about cutting ties with city living and going off the grid. If you're wanting to live a self-sufficient lifestyle, you almost can't do better than Texas.

Why Is Off-Grid Living In Texas The Way To Go?

Texas has a lot to offer those who wish to live off the grid. There are several places in Texas that those on a quest to live a self-sufficient life flock to. Look at the area surrounding Terlingua, for example.

When going off-grid became something everyone wanted to do, tons of people tried making it work in the desert near the Lone Star State's most famous ghost town. If you do any digging into the issue, you find that most people weren't cut out for it. If you are, though, Texas might be just the place for you.

Recently, Home Gnome decided to look at all 50 states and see which ones are the best for going off-grid. How did Texas do? The Lone Star State came in second behind Iowa. If this is the kind of life you've dreamed of, Texas is probably the place for you.

What Makes Texas One Of The Best Places To Live Off The Grid

According to Home Gnome, Texas has a lot to boast about when it comes to living off the grid. Texas actually came in first in several key metrics.

For their rankings, they discovered that Texas is number one for off-grid living when it comes to:

  • Suitability of electric, water, and waste laws
  • Projected 10-year growth of wind power production
  • State homestead exemptions
  • Number of critical-access hospitals

Looking at that list you'll notice some pretty important issues. The homestead exemptions are a big issue, and having access to a hospital is something you want to have. Being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no way to get medical care sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
