Former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has been asked about rumors that he’s going to enter next year’s Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ireland – and he didn't completely reject the idea.

The annual TV competition has run since 1956 and it’s seen as expressing a uniquely European sense of humor, with nations submitting votes on each others’ attempts at creating the most memorable – and not necessarily good – pop track and presentation.

Asked about the rumor on Irish radio station Today FM, the former Johnny Rotten said, “As rumors go, that’s a beaut.” Laughing, he continued: “Nothing’s been signed. Just like the Bible, Jesus has yet to put his signature to it. So it’s a rumor – but as rumors go, I’m fully qualified, aren’t I, as an American-English-Irishman. Perfect, well-travelled, well-seasoned, up and at it, ready!”

When the singer was asked to comment again later in the show, he said, “Listen, that’s my favorite rumor of probably my whole life. It’s hilarious, and it’s bound to confuse a whole bunch of peoples – but surely that’s the point, isn’t it? You know, expect the unexpected.” He reflected, “If I did such a thing, I can tell you it will be great if done.”

Today FM noted that Lydon had the correct ancestry to represent Ireland, saying, “His father comes from Galway and his mam was from Cork so it wouldn’t be completely out of the question!”

Finnish glam rock band Lordi won the Eurovision Song Contest with their track “Hard Rock Hallelujah” in 2006. Before that, the event launched the careers of ABBA and Celine Dion.
