Lufkin ‘Big K’ Kmart to Close in March
The Lufkin Kmart, along with many other Kmart and Sears stores are being closed within the first quarter of 2017.
Kmart and Sears announced many closings Wednesday. You can see the full list here, but at least it appears we won't be losing the Sears in the Lufkin Mall.
The partnering companies said the following in a media release:
The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take actions to strengthen the Company’s operations and fund its transformation. Many of these stores have struggled with their financial performance for years and we have kept them open to maintain local jobs and in the hopes that they would turn around. But in order to meet our objective of returning to profitability, we have to make tough decisions and will continue to do so, which will give our better performing stores a chance at success. Eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.
Kmart has always been a viable option for Lufkinites when it came to shopping. I know I was able to get a huge brunt of my Christmas shopping done there.
The release also talks about liquidation sales that may start as early as Friday, January 6th.
Three more Kmart stores will be closing in Texas to include Odessa, El Paso, and Killeen.
