Legendary has an ambitious plan to combine two of the biggest movie monsters in history, King Kong and Godzilla, into one massive movie. After the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters, King K and Goddy Z will square off in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong.

But where do you go from there? Short of throwing Godzooky into the mix, that seems like a creative dead end. But in a new interview with Collider, Steven DeKnight, director of the upcoming Pacific Rim: Uprising (another movie in the Legendary stable), hinted that the future of all three franchises could conceivably intertwine. Or, at least, the idea has been discussed:

I won’t say there’s an Easter Egg but there’s been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]. Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we’ve talked about is that could happen, it’s always a possibility. It’s by far not a certainty; it’s merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen.”

It does seem like a natural fit, combining giant monsters with big robots that fight giant monsters. But if it happens, I’m rooting for Kong and Godzilla. They’re old school. Pacific Rim: Uprising opens in theaters on March 23, 2018.
