On Friday, January 21st the Diboll Lumberjack Boys Varsity basketball team took on  Pineywoods Community Academy Timberwolves from Lufkin, Texas. My son is on the Timberwolves and I went to attend the game.

The parking lot was mostly full at the Angelina College Gym on the AC Campus. I was running a bit behind and walked briskly up to the gym.

There is always a police presence at the games. Usually there are just a couple of local Angelina County Sheriff deputies, but this time AC Police and Lufkin Police were there in force, with a couple displaying assault rifles on their back.

Students Were Escorted Into Game After Shooting

I had posted the story early in the week about a 17-year-old that had been tragically shot and killed.

This story has been edited to reflect new information

Demarion Tyree Glenn was the young man that was shot and killed Tuesday, January 18th, 2022 at approximately 9:35 pm.

Because of that shooting in Diboll, only parents and grandparents were allowed to attend the game that was Homecoming for Pineywoods. I had no idea about this going into the facility, and I was rethinking my fast walk past all the law enforcement there to protect us all.

Diboll won that conference game by a score of 97-50 and both teams played their hearts out. They won despite these hardships. Having a police escort for both teams coming and leaving the building, kept the reality of the past few days top of mind for them all.
