It’s been a long, long, long, long road for the new Friday the 13th movie, which was originally announced back in 2013. Since then, the project has made a few trips through the rumor mill, landing and losing a director and picking up a few different release dates along the way. But maybe things are finally turning around for the latest installment in the classic franchise, as Paramount and Platinum Dunes have their sights set on a new director.

Per Deadline, Breck Eisner is in talks to helm the long-awaited new Friday the 13th movie, which was previously in development with The Signal director David Bruckner. Eisner is known for helming the 2010 remake of The Crazies, and most recently directed the Vin Diesel fantasy-horror-action flick The Last Witch Hunter.

Last we heard, the new Friday the 13th movie will give iconic boogeyman Jason Voorhees a new origin story, sort of, by including his father — a character who has not been prominently featured in previous films (Jason’s murderous mother, Pamela, is still apparently involved in the story).

Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski wrote the newest draft of the screenplay, with previous versions penned by Bruckner and Hannibal producer Nick Antosca. The release of the long-gestating sequel / reboot has been pushed back a few times, most recently to January 13, 2017. Even with another potential director lined up, it seems unlikely that Paramount will be able to get the film in theaters by that date.
