In a farewell message on their official website, The White Stripes say...
"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.  It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band have it stay that way."  The band released six studio albums over the course of their 13-year career.
Jack has plenty of other projects.  Besides starting two new bands, THE RACONTEURS and THE DEAD WEATHER, he also runs the Nashville, Tennessee-based Third Man Records.
