Maybe it's just me, but anytime I see new construction anywhere in or around Deep East Texas, it's pretty exciting. It gives me a chance to speculate, and even do a little research about what's going on in my area. Sometimes, it doesn't take much to find out, thanks to new owners putting up "Coming Soon" signage. Sometimes, I don't have any idea what's coming until the construction is done and the actual signs are posted.

As of right now, it looks like some construction on South 1st Street in Lufkin is going to fall into the latter, more secretive category. For years, there's been a space - a HUGE lot - on South 1st that's been for sale. It's been overgrown, with only a stone wall visible. You may recognize this:

When I say huge lot, I'm not exaggerating. This lot spans the length starting across the street from Domino's and goes all the way down to Sound Techs. Needless to say, it includes a lot of acreage. Apparently, there was a house on the hillside as well, one that couldn't be seen from the roadway because of the overgrowth.

Now, the stone wall is gone, the house is gone, and the overgrowth is no more. It now looks like this:

Now that the land has been cleared, the question becomes: What the heck is going on there? Will there be a new business moving in? Or will it be a residential space? I'm not quite sure how the space is zoned, so I don't know which one it would be. Maybe they're just clearing it to make it a clear space. Who knows?
