Let's give a healthy shout out to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) who was out in force during the "big chill day" of 2013.

January 15 was a brutally cold day here in East Texas, and with freezing rain and sleet making travel treacherous, it was refreshing to see Public Works in action.

TxDOT was checking overpasses and bridge crossings; also stopping on the side of the highway to get a closer look at the landscape.

One only has to look at The Weather Channel video of frozen pavement, and foot long icicle formations on trees and power lines, to realize a Tornado Watch is not really that bad.

Isn't "freezing rain" and "sleet" the same thing?  Someone help me, please!

By the way, in case we get stung with another severe cold front before winter winds up, you can get updated highway conditions by calling 1-800-452-9292, or visiting their website by clicking here.
